Sambor Prei Kuk
Ancient Ishanapura — Capital of the Chenla Empire
Hidden within a dense forest 35 km north of Kampong Thom town, Sambor Prei Kuk is the largest pre-Angkorian temple complex in Southeast Asia. Built in the 7th century as the royal capital Ishanapura, it contains over 100 brick sanctuaries — many still draped in tree roots and forest shadows, exactly as explorers first found them.
The First Capital of the Khmer World
Long before Angkor rose from the jungle, there was Ishanapura. Under King Isanavarman I, the Chenla Empire reached its greatest extent, and this forest city became the beating heart of early Khmer civilization — a centre of art, religion, and political power from around 610 to 650 AD.
The temples of Sambor Prei Kuk introduced architectural innovations that would define Khmer building for centuries: the use of fired brick, intricate medallion carvings of flying palaces (vimanas), and the first experiments with octagonal tower forms that later evolved into the prasats of Angkor.
UNESCO recognised the site in 2017 not just for its age, but for being 'an outstanding example of the earliest Khmer art and architecture' — a living laboratory where you can trace the evolutionary steps that led to Angkor Wat.
Three Temple Groups
Group N — Prasat Sambour
The northern group, anchored by a large central tower and surrounded by smaller brick sanctuaries. Look for the fine lintels and carved doorways that show Chenla-period iconography at its most refined.
Group S — Prasat Tao
The southern group features two iconic stone lions guarding its entrance — among the oldest surviving Khmer sculptures. The towers here are wrapped in ancient trees, creating one of the most photogenic forest temple scenes in Cambodia.
Group O — Prasat Yeay Peau
The central group holds the most famous structure: an octagonal tower unique in all of Khmer architecture. This is the architectural blueprint that influenced temple design across the empire.
