Sambor Prei Kuk

Sambor Prei kuk is a cultural site located in Sambor village, Sambor commune, Prasat Sambor district, about 30 kilometers northeast of provincial town on national road 62 about 16km turn right on road 219 about 14km to the Sambor Prei Kuk site. The site was once an ancient capital named Isanapura and a religious center for the worship of Shiva Brahmanism. According to Chiness note that Chenla empire was founded in the 3 king’s government: Phavarman I (598 A.D), Mahendravarman (600 A.D) and Isanavarman I (616-635 A.D). The reign of the king Isanavarman I founded the ancient capital in Sambor Prei Kuk area. The every forms of arts and architecture that the scholars of historical art and architecture classified to Sambor Prei kuk style. Many temples were built in Sambor Prei kuk during the reign of King Isanavarman I (616- 635 A.D) in the 7th century. The temples of Sambor Prei kuk constructed of solid brick, late rite and sandstone and decorated by bas-reliefs. The lintel, pillars and the door frames are all made of sandstone. Today the majority sanctuaries were collapse by nature and human. The Sambor Prei Kuk site was inscribed to the world heritage list on 08-July-2017. Sambor Prei kuk is divided into three main groups and various small temple groups: 1. Prasat Sambor (North Group) 2. Prasat Tor (Central Group) 3. Prasat Yeay Poun (South Group) Small temple groups: Prasat Kroul Romeas, Sandan temple, Asrom Eisey temple, Bosream temple and Chhrey temple.

Kuk Nokor temple

Kuk Nokor temple is located in Trodork Poung Village, Pong Ror Commune, Taing Kok district, about 79 km from provincial town on the national road 6 and turn right about 2 km. These sanctuaries were built on the flat ground, on a square terrace made of late rite and sandstone facing to the East with the rampart surrounding. This rampart has a 35 m length (East to West) and a 25 m width (North to South). There is surrounding rampart of one meter height and 0.8 meter thick with two gateways (Gopura): Eastern gateway is 9 m height divided into 3 rooms, and western gateway is small and has square shape. East of the temple, there are 2 ponds the small one has about 3-meter depth, 45-meter length and 20-meter width, and the big one has 160-meter length, 88-meter width and more than one meter depth. Prasat Kuk Nokor was built in 10th-11th century by the king Suryavarman I (1002-1050) in Khleang style, dedicate to Shiva.

The commander of troops gave his soldiers with a drink of water by using a bowl in front of a small shrine the east edge lake near the hole of crocodile. A minute happened strange miracle, the sky turned dark and heavily rain, lightning, the land kept the bronze bowl began to crack and absorbed with disappearance and the commander of troop died at that time. The gateway of the resort was built with (Preah Vihear style), man-made mountain, bronze bowl image, other buildings such as: resting houses on the Koh Rumdol (Rumdol island), hotel and guest houses, Phsit guest house, basin, camping place, museum building, restaurant, model Angkor Wat temple and beautiful attractive gardens etc...

Phnom Santuk is a cultural and natural site located in Kor Koh village, Kor Koh commune, Santuk district, about 15 kilometers from the provincial town traveling along National Road 6 and turn left 2 kilometers. The Santuk mountain has been called in many names as below: - Phnom Thom (in history) - Phnom Arth Santuk (in history) - Phnom Santuk (in history) - Phnom Chorm Chong kiri - Phnom Kroptuk - Phnom Preah Bat Channtuk The site area has been four mountains: Phnom Santuk, Phnom Sras Khchao (Phnom Tbeng), Phnom Penchum (Phnom Krapeu) and Phnom Champa (Phnomsroch). The site obtains rich cultural resources for all tourists to visit such as: - Staircase climb up the top of the mountain, 2.8 m width and 809 steps reconstructed in 1994 on the old staircase made concrete, 1.8 m and 1550 steps constructed in 1965. - Stupa was built in 15 century and other sculptures. - Buddhist temple having eight corners constructed in 19-20 century. - Statue of Preah Ratanakodth Preah Bat NoromdomSihanuok. - Many Buddha statues were carved from great mountain rock including three big Buddha statues the reclining Buddha (reaching Nirvan), each has more than 10-meter length. - Preah Bat Chan Tuk statue was carved on the stone shape as foot of a sacred human and other sculptures. - Prasat Touch of pyramid shape, made of sandstone, has three stories and three-meter height, and is located next to the ancient wooden temple (presently, it is made of cement) with a rectangular pond (10m x 10m). - By the stories, the construction and the statues were erected during the reign of Preah Ponhea Dharma Reacha (1474-1494).

Located in Prasat Village, Prasat Commune, Santuk district, about 29 km far from provincial town and there is road from the southern direction of 500-meter length. This temple was built of brick, masonry and sandstone in 8th century (706 A.D) with Kampong Preah style to dedicate to Shiva. It was a sanctuary-built temple on the flat terrace without the false door and faced to the east. In the ancient period, the doors were made by two wooden boards-one carved with sculptures of male divinities at another one carved with female divinities. The southern framed door was inscribed with five lines of inscription, and its back was mostly eroded. The lintel was ornamented by the garlands; the diamond column and the upper corner of the temple contained the segments of Linga and Yoni. South of the large temple, was a hill called Toul Samrong or Toul Nak Ta Samrong; and east of this hill, there was a Pou tree in which the local people call Toul Nak Ta Deum Pou.

This area is a hydraulies system constructed in 1978 during Pol Pot regime and restored in 2018 by the current Royal Government. This area is very popular for local tourist. They always go to visit there on weekend day and other vocation day off for relaxing, fresh air, and eating local food with the fresh landscape and swimming, boat riding and fishing.

If tourist travel to Tipo commune about 72km from provincial town when arriving Tipo commune continue on red road about 18km to the Sen Apivath village turn left on dirty road about 5km to the TnousTaprom. The site covered by the place is massive and offers loads for the tourists to enjoy. This site has a feature ancient temple, monasteries, river, spring water and nature forest. Cultural Tourism Religion Centre of SampovTreylok Treylak is a worship goodness place, located Kal MekhTbong Krape commune, Santuk district Kampong Thom province. This worship has a gateway Panhchi Pagoda, about 8 km from the national road 6 and 12 km from the provincial town. The worship was built during 1982 by Preah Ang Keut Vay, former Preah Kuro head of a Buddhist monastery Samrong Mean Chey Pagoda, namely Lapak (Lbak) pagoda and inaugurated consequences on Thursday 21 March 2013.

Kok Rokar temple is located in Rokar village, Srayov Commune, Steung Sen town about 14 km from provincial town. The temple was built of sandstone and late rite in Khleang style at the end of 11th century during the reign of king Suryavarman I to dedicate to Shiva. This isolated sanctuary (dimension: 6 m x 5 m; 8 m height) was built on the hill and faced to the east. The central part of the temple has conical form with porches opening to the east, and a door reached from the eastern entrance (three other doors were the false doors). The diamond column has octagonal forms, and the three lintels have various forms. Based on the study to the site, the sanctuary was formed in rectangular shape. The outside rampart has 25 m x 25 m size and Gopura from the four directions which jointed to the surrounding laterite rampart. Outside the rampart, there were likely moat surrounded as we saw some marks remain until now.

Wat Indrisamvora, also known as Wat Kampong Thom, is located in Kdei village, Prey Tahu commune, Steung Sen town, about 1 kilometer from the provincial town on the national road 6. It was built 17th century by Oknha Decho Boran Rachea called Ta Krahamka. This pagoda was selected for tourism attraction, because it is better criteria such as: beautiful, good environment, sanitation, large place, different gateways and architectural buildings constructed by Khmer style and there are infrastructures like Bali building, library, Buddhist temple, house for Buddhist monks, eating house and displaying the ox cart, palm boat etc. The pagoda has also the holy place, education site of both Buddha and empire powers. It is a place for visitors to relax and visit, especially during festivals.

Porthivang Temple is in the Kampong Preah or Prey Kuk style of the late Chenla period and is a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva.

Prasat Kroul Romeas located the southern side of Sambor temple group about 500 m. This temple was built during the reign king Suryavarman I (end of 11th century). The sanctuaries made of brick, sandstone and laterite and dedicated Shiva god. At the eastern temple there were four small sanctuaries, made of brick in raw line on quadrilateral hill and faced to the East, perhaps it was built later Sambor temple in Middle 7th century dedicated to Shiva god. At the southeastern of these temples, there were two temples recognized as the original ancient khmer styles and the sanctuaries were very important other temples in that area. In the Kroul Romeas temple group located in the southeastern, named Srei Kroupleak temple.

Andet Temple is located in Prasat Village, Sankor Commune, Kampong Svay district, about 27 kilometers northwest of provincial town turn left 2km from the national road 6. The temple was built in second half of 7th century (627-707) during the reign of king Jayavarman I to dedicate to God Hirihara (Shiva+Vishu), in Kampong Preah style and made of brick with masonry, laterite and sandstone. Prasat Andet had isolated plan, built on a 5.30-meter height artificial hill, and was form in rectangular shape with 7.50-meter length, 5.50-meter width and 1meter thick (interior to exterior). It was facing to the East. The coronet (2.22 lengths) was ornamented around by the rings decorated, and at between of the rings we decorated with garland and bulb flowers surrounded, which are joining each other by the end of the decorations. In original former time, this temple contained Harihara Statue standing on a decorative royal throne, and the statue was brought to be kept at Phnom Penh National Museum. The framed door had 1m width, 2m height and 0.20 m thick.
