Stung Sen River

Sunset walks, floating markets, and the quiet pulse of Cambodian riverside life

The Stung Sen — 'the Sen River' — flows through the heart of Kampong Thom town and connects the province to the great Tonle Sap lake. For locals, it is the backdrop of daily life: morning markets on its banks, fishing boats at dusk, monks crossing the bridge at dawn. For visitors, it is the softer side of Kampong Thom — a place to slow down after a day of temple visits.

About the River

The River That Shapes the Province

The Stung Sen is not just a river — it is a highway, a market, a food source, and a social space that has organised life in Kampong Thom for generations. The river rises in the Cardamom mountains to the west and flows east to join the Tonle Sap, one of the most biodiverse freshwater lakes on earth.

During the rainy season (June to October), the river swells dramatically and the surrounding lowlands flood, supporting the fish populations and rice agriculture that sustain the province. In the dry season, its banks become evening gathering places where locals set up food stalls, fly kites, and watch the long sunsets over the water.

The riverside promenade in Kampong Thom town has been upgraded in recent years, creating a pleasant walking street lined with local restaurants, coffee shops, and small markets — making it the ideal place to spend an evening after exploring the temples.

What to Do

1

Sunset Promenade

The riverside walkway glows at golden hour. Local families, students, and vendors fill the promenade — bring a camera and find a riverside restaurant for an early evening meal.

2

Morning Market

The market alongside the river comes alive before 7 AM with fresh fish, river vegetables, and the province's famous Kuy Teav (rice noodle soup). Arrive early for the full experience.

3

Fishing Village Visit

A short tuk-tuk ride from town brings you to riverside fishing communities where hand-cast nets are still the primary technique — a glimpse into an unchanged way of life.

4

Boat on the River

Local guides can arrange small boat trips on the river during the wet season — particularly beautiful at dusk with the light falling on the water and the town in silhouette.
